Ignite. Renew. Energize.

Archbishop calls for a “New Pentecost” at 2014 Synod

Yesterday’s Gospel reading drew us back to the pivotal question that was at the heart of Archbishop Listecki’s pastoral letter: “Who do you say that I am?” Because our relationship with Christ is a dynamic one, our personal answer to the question should always be developing and deepening. This answer is discovered in the context of the Church, so our response is shaped by our ongoing encounter with Christ in prayer, Scripture, Sacrament, and service.

When we hear Jesus’ question, we may respond with who we THINK Jesus is. But Jesus is not an idea. Jesus is the person of God who invites us into deep relationship. We need to SAY who He is with the fullness of our lives. We need to let our words and actions proclaim our belief that we are loved and saved by Him. The question of Jesus is meant to ignite a full-bodied 24/7 response.

The more we grow in our response to the question of who Jesus is, the more our intentional discipleship will be genuine and serve as a witness to draw others into the same question. “As disciples, let us ask the Father to grant us a deeper knowledge of Christ, and let us ask the Holy Spirit to explain to us this mystery.” (Pope Francis, February 20, 2014)

For inviting us to have a personal relationship with you in the Church:
We thank you, Lord.

For forgiving us when we lose our way on the journey of discipleship:
We thank you, Lord.

For the guidance of your Spirit through the implementation of the Synod:
We thank you, Lord.

Look around more intently this week to recognize signs pointing us to answer “Who do you say that I am?”

Does the warmth in the air draw you to recognize the warmth of Christ’s abiding love

Does the power of a summer storm remind you that there is nothing more powerful than the love of Christ and that nothing can separate us from it (Romans 8:35)?

Do children or grandchildren returning to another school year energize in us a desire always to be learning more about who Christ is in our lives?
